Using Wingdings In Formulas

Using Wingdings In Formulas Excel

I have an Excel formula that uses smiley faces (smile, frown, neutral). The problem is all three smiley faces only appear in the wingdings. I am typing the formula in Ariel. When I use the Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map function, select Wingdings and each smiley face (smile (J); frown (L); neutral (K)), then hit Select and Copy and then get out of the Character Map, I then hit Ctrl + Insert buttons twice. However, nothing changes, because the wingdings are not a part of the Ariel fonts. I need all three smiley faces for the formula and all three don't appear in Ariel. Is there another way to get around this? Here is the formula: =IF(target < sales, "J", IF(target > sales, "L","K")) or to make more sense to you: =IF(C3B3,"L"(smiley face w/a frown),"K"(smiley face w/a neutral expression))). I hope this makes sense. Is there another way to use wingding symbols in a formula that is being typed in the Ariel font?

Hello all,
New to the forums.
I'm in the process of creating a new report and I'm stuck.
My report consists of a set target in a field, a score and percentage of target.
e.g Target is 400
score is 450.
Percentage is 1.125 of target. (=score/target)
Now what I would like to do is create a formula that does not go above 100%, but instead work in reverse if you go over the target.
E.g. Target 400 .. Score was 450 ... percentage of target is 87.5%
Thanks in advanced.

Today I ran into an odd problem. I typed in values for column A rows 1 through 10 then values for column B rows 1 through 10. then in column C, I made the formula C1=A1/B1. The math was correct it showed 542 in the C1 cell. So I dragged that formula down and it showed 542 in all column C cells which is not correct. And when I went to check to see if the formula was correctly dragged it was. For instance, the formula in C2 is =A2/B2 however the value of that cell showed 542 which was not the correct math/value.
But it gets even more weird. When I click on the Column C cells and then it shows the formula up top in the formula bar and if I put my cursor anywhere in the formula bar and hit Return the formula does not change however the correct value then appears in the Column C cell. It is like the act of putting the cursor in the formula activates it to work properly but until it is activated that C cell shows the value of the cell which it was dragged down from.
This is quite bizarre. Has anyone ever seen this before? I have no idea what is going on. I ran a scan for viruses and none were found. I tried it on several new/different spreadsheets but it keeps happening.
Thanks for any tips on this.

I have a couple of worksheets that have goal seek already performed on 20 target cells (for each worksheet). I did this manually, without a macro (since I'm absolutely horrible at all of this).
Now from what I can tell, I need a code to add to the worksheet module in order to make sure that the goal seek updates itself whenever I change a value in the formula of the target cell.
what IS that code?! I can't understand the codes some people have put up, so I have no idea what to do.
Target Cell: M21:M42
Changing Cells: N21: N42

I am trying to do a very simple copy and paste of a simple formula in Excel 2007 and nothing seems to be working. Excel will not let me copy and paste a formula and will only paste the value into to workbook. For instance, if I make a very simple spreadsheet such as:
A1 type in 10, A2 type in =A1 (calculated A2 to be 10)
B1 type in 5
And then click the copy on B1, and then click paste special on cell B2, the only options it gives me are text and unicode text and so no matter how I paste, cell b2 will always be populated with a value of 5. I cannot imagine a simpler copy and paste and no matter what I do I can't make this work.
All cells are formatted as general. It seems that all copy and pasting of formulas in my excel has been disabled. If I open any spreadsheet on my computer, I can't copy and paste formulas, but do the exact same thing on the exact same spreadsheet on any other computer and it works no problem.
Any help?

Hi,
How do I enter the value in a cell (say B4) into a formula as a constant so it doesn't change when I copy it down the column?
For example,
B4 = 2.4 (a constant)
This is the result I want:
F6 =C8 + B4*4.243
F7 =C9 + B4*4.243
F8 =C10 + B4*4.243
B4 remains constant as I copy F6 down.
What's the correct formula for F6 so I can copy it down and keep B4 fixed?
Thanks.

I have a formula in cell C1 (=A1/B1). I want to copy this formula down to row C20, however rows A2 to A20 are empty so C2 to C20 show (#DIVO!). Is there something I can put in the formula to make column C be blank until the data is enter into Columns A & B?
I have a large spreadsheet in Excel 2007. I am converting it to a .csv file to import in to another program. I need to delete all commas from all data.
When I try to replace all commas (with nothing or with another character), I get the error message "The formula you typed contains an error."
I have tried various formats (text, general, etc.) and various file types (.xls,.xlsx, .csv) and still get the same error.

I am trying to sum all numbers <0 using the SUMIF formula in Excel 2003.
FORMULA: =sumif(range,criteria,sum_range)
I got it to work, but I have cell ranges to total that are not next to each
other (such as A5:A15 and C5:C15).
When selecting the ranges for the formula, Excel writes them A5:A15,C5:C15
because of the comma (,) between the cell ranges Excel is reading the A5:A15
as the range and C5:C15 as the critera. How can I get this formula to allow
me to select multiple cell ranges?
All help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Great tip! But one thing: On my machine (Excel 2008 Mac), the values in the formula cell are not correctly calculated simply by dragging. Instead, the values are equal to the cell above (the first entry formula value). To get the correct value, I need to click in the formula bar and then hit enter. (I only discovered this after an hour of tinkering, figuring I had botched the formula!)
Are there any ways around this so that it updates upon dragging the formula?

I have a spreadsheet that when I copy the formula, it copies correctly
(changes the cells it should subtract), however, the result stays the same.
It matches the formula I copied it from, even though the cells to calculate
are now different. I even did a paste special and said only formula, but
still, same result. If I actually type in the formula, it works fine, but I
have a lot I need to copy and paste. Is there a way I can fix this?
Thanks,

Hello All
I wonder if you could help with this one, I have a list of data like this (no spaces or other characters)
JN551122B
What I need to do is split each of the characters in to its own cell
if JN551122B was in cell A1 I'd want to return:
B2 C2 D2 E2 F2 G2 H2 I2 J2
J N 5 5 1 1 2 2 B
The nearest I have got is the right function, but it brings over the preceeding characters, and I need each character in its own cell. Hopefully I could copy/paste a formula and change the reference for each cell value, i.e. 1 would return J, 2 = N, 3 = 5, 4 = 5 etc.
Thanks for your help!

Hello from sunny Madrid
I have created a complex formula to help me calculating Golf handicaps for players.
The formula is in the first cell and I want to drag the formula across to the right to cover the 18 holes.
But ALL the values change and I want some to change and some to stay constant.
How do I tell excel to drag the formula across but keep certain parts of the formula the same..ie ....=D11.... in the formula when dragged across doesn't go D12,D13;D14 in each cells formula and should stay as D11 for all.
Many thanks for your help

I have a coworker's file that he is having trouble with. He is using Excel 2000 SP3. When copying a cell with a formula in it of "=D6+C6" and pasting it into the next cell down, it will display the same value in the cell as the calculated value from above, but has the correct formula displayed in the formula bar of "=D7+C7".
Example:
A1: 50
A2: 10
B1: 60
B2: 20
A3: Formula: =A1+A2 Displays: 60
Right click A3, Copy, right click B3, paste
A3 displays 60
When I click save, it will change the display value to 80.
I am trying this on his workstation and mine. Mine has Office 2010, so I think there might be an issue with the file itself.
Also, not just copy and paste. I can also just click the top cell after filling in the formula and then drag the bottom right of the cell downward and it will do the same of filling in the correct formula, but have the incorrect value.
I know that I could get him to just click save each time before really looking at the results, but that is just a band aid to the problem.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Hello everyone!!!!
Here is my situation. I have been trying to learn macros but have not made one yet. Need your help. Here at work, I have some incompentant computer workers who claim they KNOW MS sooo well and have certificates etc... *COUGH COUGH* ya ok... LMAO
We have a "shared" work book we all work in. It's nothing fancy, just use it as a PO Book but since it is shared some people continue to not save before they add in more work so that they see a "refreshed" copy of the workbook before they start writing in cells that already contain information.
How to I create a macro button at the top of the page that is literally a SAVE button.. instead of them saving by going to File Save or cntrl+s ??? I just thought that MAYBE having a big button in their face will remind them.
Secondly as back up I was wondering if you can create a macro to do a refresh of everyones screens automatically say every 2 or 5 mins??? I don't mean a save... but a refresh so the screen actually updates in front of you. (although I will keep this little piece of magic out of their knowledge so they don't rely on it, just though it would be a secondary back up to helping eliminate these mishaps cause we are loosing alot of information by people saving overtop of other peoples work and not caring.)
Thanks so much!!!!! Muchly appriciated.

I'm having a problem in a workbook with several ActiveX command buttons. I had been using the form control buttons to run macros, but the boss wanted each button to have it's own, different color. So I removed the form control buttons and created new ActiveX command buttons. I got into the button properties and set the background colors. I added the _Click code to run the macros when the user clicked the buttons.
All of the buttons were working fine. Then I saved and closed the workbook and went to lunch. Now when I open the workbook, the buttons don't work! When I click them nothing happens. They appear frozen. They don't even seem to click. No error message. Nothing.
If I rightclick the button in Design Mode and select Properties, I get sheet properties not the button properties. I can't seem to locate the command button properties any longer. I still see the button name "cmdButtonGetInfo" and "=EMBED("Forms.CommandButton.1","") in the name box and formula bar. The odd thing is if I create a new button it works fine until I save and close the file. When I reopen the file none of the buttons work.
It's like the buttons are being disabled when I close or open the file. Any suggestions?

Dear Sirs,
Am in need for this solution very badly and what could be a better place than excelforum !
I have an MS Excel File (2007 version) sample file attached, which has name, designation, blood group and so on. The last column is for hyperlinking photographs of individuals.
In the same folder where I have saved this excel file, are lying photographs of individuals. While scanning the photographs, I have saved them serially i.e. 1,2,3 and so on.
In the Excel file, in last column, I have given the respective serial numbers. In order to hyperlink one has to select that particular Cell, press Ctrl K and you automatically go to the folder containing individual photographs, you select that photo and OK.
Problem :
I have to do this hyperlinking one by one and if there 1000 photos, lot of time is wasted.
Solution Needed :
Just in case of excel formula, which we copy and paste, Can I get a command by virtue of which the column titled Photo or column next to it gets automatically Hyperlinked to respective photo WHEN I copy and paste such command to all cells in that column.
Thanks a million and warm regards ::: Jack

Here's my formula... =SUM(S7)T5
If that number is less than 100, I want it to show as blank.
Any help?
Right now, I'm trying to accomplish this by making a conditional format...meaning when my cell equals less than 100 I make the cell color and font the same (so it looks blank, but its not). When I print it, it still shows the negative value.
Thanks.

I found this solution for "drop down list with hyperlink" but it did not work.
Perhaps a better solution is to use a workaround that relies on the HYPERLINK function to refer to whatever is selected in the dropdown list. For instance, if you have your data validation dropdown list in cell A1, then you might put the following formula in cell B1:
=HYPERLINK(A1, "Goto Link")
The solution directly above provides exactly what I am looking for
in the field where I write the formula, but it fails to hyperlink.
I have created a drop down list and linked each one of them to a
specific worksheet. When I select them individually they link to
appropriate worksheet. But when I select them in the drop down
list I receive the following error when I select the Hyperlink in
cell B1 as directed above.
"Cannot open the specified file"
Any thoughts?
Bob

I would like to create a formula that removes a specific character if it appears in a cell. In this case, if the text in the name cell starts with * or #, remove it. Otherwise, keep the contents intact. Examples:
Code:
Is there a formula that will get me where I want to be?
Thanks!

Code:

Hello
I have several rows of text data, the first 17 characters of which are in this format (4 letters__DD.MM.YYYY
It's then followed by a variable number of characters i.e.
ABCD 01.02.2003 ABCDEFG HIJ KLMNO
I would be grateful for a formula that will delete all characters to the right of the 17th character (i.e. the '3').
Many thanks!

I am looking for the code to select the visible data after applying a data filter. Actually I know how to select the data after applying the data filter but the issue is I am not able to exclude the header row and give the target range as used (nonblank) rows only!!
I am using below code to Select the Visible rows in the target range:

Problems in this code a
1) after applying the filter, while selecting the data it is selecting all the rows in given range till last row on the workbook. I need this to select the the data only till the last used row in the given range.
2) It is not possible to provide the address of the first row after we apply the filter since the first row address may change depending on the values in the table.
E.g. 1st time when I am running the macro the first row in the visible filtered data is starting at Cell address A4 and next time when I will run the macro it may be A6
3) The Code is also selecting the 1st row which is a header row. How can we exclude it from selection.
Some one please revert with the solution.
